The company was started in 1979 by the government of South Africa following the imposition of sanctions by the United Nations Security Council. ADE was licensed in 1979 to manufacture Mercedes diesel engines primarily for military vehicles such as the Unimog, Ratel, Buffel, Casspir, Rooikat and Samil vehicles.
After the 1994 democratic elections the company was closed, and due to demand, reopened again by the current shareholders, and the license with Daimler was terminated. Operating from facilities in Johannesburg and Cape Town, the focus was broadened and now also include the supply to the road and passenger transport Industries, the mining industry with our Bell application engines, parts and components, and still the defence and peacekeeping forces.
Atlantis Diesel Engineering (PTY) LTD or more commonly known as ADE, is a world renowned brand name with new and reconditioned ADE/ Mercedes/ Bell/ Man/ Deutz/ John Deere/ Cummins/ Cat engines, parts, components and gearboxes manufactured and remanufactured in South Africa. Additional parts are also imported from OEM suppliers in Europe and other parts of the world.
Due to the high quality of our products, customer service and our willingness to engage ourselves in joint ventures, we are now working in association with leading military, armoured and mining industry vehicle manufactures in Africa and other parts of the world. ADE engines are used on various applications for the United Nations and African Union Peace Keeping Forces. Some of our engines and components are also exported to counties as far as Russia, Egypt, Nigeria, USA and Europe.
